Dr. Teague's Drafting Bench — Continuum Edition

Topic Continuum: ECE → High School

Every universal concept has a shape at every age. This STEM/STEAM Drafting Bench activity displays two worked examples. Next, you take on the Curriculum Director's role, using the Drafting Bench instruments to draft your own learning continuum — from a band of your choice.
Same concept — shape — held under increasing structural pressure. ECE perceives it; high school engineers with it.

Naming & Sorting

Circle, square, triangle — found in street signs, blocks, and around the room. Pure perception and vocabulary.

Properties & Building

Shapes gain sides, angles, symmetry. Kids combine shapes to build things — tangrams, a square folding into a cube.

Measurable & Provable

Geometry proper: area, perimeter, angle relationships, intro coordinate geometry. Shapes become measurable and provable.

Design Constraint

Architecture and drafting: shapes as functional constraints — scale, load, blueprints, intro CAD. Geometry serves a real structural purpose.

The caterpillar doesn't get left behind at ECE — it's the anchor image the whole continuum keeps returning to.

Caterpillar → Butterfly

Concrete, observable, sensory. Talk about it, read about it, see a photo mural, draw it, watch it happen live if a chrysalis is on hand. The wow is the whole point.

Anchor image: this is the picture everything later comes back to.

Life Cycles Broaden

Frogs, plants, seasons. Kids start predicting ("what comes next?") and sequencing independently.

Callback: "Just like the caterpillar didn't just get bigger — it became something different. Living things change in stages, not just size."

Metamorphosis Named

Personal identity change, historical "before/after" transformation, mitosis and puberty as biological change.

Callback: we name this "metamorphosis" — not gradual growth, but complete restructuring, like a caterpillar dissolving into imaginal cells before it reforms.

Growth vs. Metamorphosis

Social movements, phase transitions, paradigm shifts — analyzed as systems-level, multi-variable, causal change.

Callback: students apply the frame as an analytic tool — is this growth (more of the same) or metamorphosis (real restructuring)?
Pick a universal concept from your own discipline. You've personally been age 3, age 8, age 12, and age 16 — draft each band from lived memory before you draft it from theory.

Station 1

Concrete. Sensory. Observable. What can a 3-year-old touch, watch, or point to that IS this concept — no abstraction allowed?

0 words

Station 2

The concept gains a property or a pattern. Kids start predicting, sorting, or combining — not just noticing.

Station 3

It gets named. Abstraction begins — this is where vocabulary catches up to intuition.

0 words

Station 4

Systems-level. Multi-variable. The concept becomes a lens for analyzing something real and complex.

Station 5 — The Metaphor Thread

What's the ECE-band image that could stay visible all the way up — the phrase you'd catch yourself saying again at age 16 without translating it?
